One of our newer programs, Leath
Commons is our first permanent housing project. Families
qualifying for Leath Commons may stay indefinitely. This program is
designed to serve homeless families with at least one disabled family
member.
In working with the homeless, CIHN has found that nearly a fifth of the families served have become homeless due to a disabling condition which impedes the family from achieving income sufficient for housing. Additionally, for families receiving disability income, the ability to sustain housing on such a limited income often results in homelessness. To serve this need Leath Commons was established February 2003. Program: Leath Commons provides five units of housing with supportive services to homeless families with disabilities. These services are similar to other CIHN programs in that all participate in the Transitions Program. Additionally, Leath Commons provides legal assistance, in home support, and monthly home visits by the Case Manager.
Results: The first families moved in January 2004. CIHN is looking forward to wonderful outcomes for all involved in this new endeavor. Donations: The homes were donated by a private citizen and rehabbed with HUD funds and private donations. The units were run down and unoccupied. This effort has revitalized those units resulting in a more positive appearance in the neighborhood. The community benefits when we work to rebuild. |
